At West Hill we believe that Physical Education, experienced in a safe and supportive environment, is essential to ensure children attain optimum physical and emotional development and good health. We intend to deliver high-quality teaching and learning opportunities that inspire all children to succeed in physical education and in developing life skills. We want to teach children skills to keep them safe such as being able to swim. We also want to teach children how to cooperate and collaborate with others as part of an effective team, understanding fairness and equity of play to embed life-long values. Our curriculum aims to improve the wellbeing and fitness of all children at West Hill, not only through the sporting skills taught, but through the underpinning values and disciplines PE promotes.
Because we recognise that our children thrive when given challenges and opportunities we allocate two lessons of high quality P.E. each week. One lesson is taught by a specialist PE teacher and one taught by their class teacher. Pupils receive specialist PE and Dance lessons from Kick London who also run some of our after school clubs. Lessons are adapted to meet the needs of all children and teaching assistants provide support to ensure that all children are able to access lessons.
At West Hill School we follow the ‘PE Planning’ scheme of work. The scheme is directly linked to the PE National Curriculum and is specifically tailored to each year group. This ensures that skills are linked, sequenced and developed through our student’s time at school. The content of the curriculum is carefully organised across the year ensuring children engage in a broad and balance PE curriculum.
Swimming is taught by specialist swimming teachers at Putney Leisure Centre . Children engage in a weekly swimming lesson throughout the school year in Year 4 to consolidate their skill set.
The PE lead ensures that West Hill School is fully engaged with local intra schools competitions and activities. These again take into account all levels of fitness and adaptations are made for pupils with SEND.
We offer a range of extra-curricular activities using external providers to ensure that PE activities delivered are of the highest quality. These have included Hip Hop Dance, Tennis, Basketball, Football and All Sports clubs.
