Design Technology

Design and Technology is an inspiring and practical subject which equips children with the skills to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world.

Design and technology allows pupils to draw on disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art and acquire a broad range of subject knowledge. The subject is taught in a cross-curricula way, linking it to other themes and subjects to ensure the learning is meaningful. We give children the opportunity to apply their knowledge, imagination and creativity to produce products that solve real and relevant problems.

At West Hill we believe that through evaluating past and existing products, along with testing their own products, children can find the best solutions and develop their problem solving skills. We also have cooking facilities. We believe having first-hand experience of cooking helps children to understand and apply the key principals of nutrition and learn how to cook, an essential life-skill.

Art

At West Hill Primary School, we aim to foster an enjoyment and appreciation of the visual arts and knowledge of artists, craftspeople and designers.

We organise trips to Tate Modern, the National Portrait Gallery and provide many opportunities to participate in workshops held by visiting artists.

West Hill School is committed to encouraging all children to develop their artistic creativity. Art is primarily taught through the topics that children learn in each year group but also as a focus for specific projects such as Arts Week. Throughout their time at West Hill children are given opportunities to explore a wide range of materials, tools and techniques. Art and design stimulate creativity and imagination enabling children to communicate what they see, feel and think using colour, texture, form and pattern.
